Heartbreaking

Every morning when I wake up, the first thing I do is turn on my computer and go to the Google news RSS feed.  I write down the 5 most current articles and extract my monogram and imagery from those stories.  Los Angeles came up on two of the top five stories this morning.  The first was about the homicide of a family from the Porter Ranch area.   The second is of the Red Sox victory over the Los Angeles Angels in the ALCS.  Losses all around for LA today.   I'm a southern California native and lived in LA proper for 5 years before moving to Boston.  Though I do not consider it home anymore, I know my connection to the region will always be strong.  I realize people are people wherever one goes.  The human condition, as personal as a family homicide or as mundane as a game defeat, is no more tragic in Los Angeles than in Boston, but something about these stories really "hit home".

White Rabbit Candy

I told a friend about today's handkerchief design and she informed me of a recall of White Rabbit Candy.  The funny (or not so funny) thing is that just a month ago, I bought a bag to another friend's housewarming party.  It was one of my favorite candies when I was a kid.  I especially loved the inner rice paper wrapping that would melt in your mouth.

Melamine Breakdown

I haven't thought about the molecular structure of anything since I nearly failed out of Chem 6A my freshman year of undergrad.  Above is the molecular breakdown of Melamine, the substance involved in the Chinese milk scandal.  The structure is beautiful as is and absolutely destructive when put in the wrong hands.

Yesterday's Handkerchief

This hanky was actually very hard to finish.  The imagery is a composite of two of the ugliest logos I have ever seen.  Blah.

Low Battery

I finished today's handkerchief with 5 minutes to spare.  I set up my camera to take the daily photograph, pushed the power button, and the display flashes "battery exhausted".  I think to myself, ain't that the truth.

This weekend has left my own batteries exhausted but I strangely feel invigorated at the same time.  Today marks the end of the 2nd week and I am still excited about the project and am ready for next week.

I will be posting the photo tomorrow morning when my batteries are recharged to full power.

More Bailouts

The United States isn't the only government struggling with the decision to bailout financial institutions.  The Irish government is considering a $35 billion Euro package for Depfa Bank, the Irish unit of  German-based Hypo Real Estate.

Makes me wonder what else will unfold in the near future.

Revisited

In regard to yesterday's hanky.....

I read this article this morning.  It sums up a bit of what I was thinking while I was working on the stitching.

O.J. just can't stay out of trouble.

Handkerchief delayed

I wasn't able to document this handkerchief until tonight.  Here it is in all its unfinished glory.

E Pluribus Unum

From wikipedia:

E pluribus unum, Latin for "Out of Many, One," is a motto found on the Seal of the United States, along with Annuit cœptis and Novus ordo seclorum, and adopted by an Act of Congress in 1782.

Never codified by law, E pluribus unum was considered a de facto motto of the United States until 1956 when the United States Congress passed an act (H.J. Resolution 396), adopting In God We Trust as the official motto.[1]

"Out of Many, One"-  What does that mean in the America of today? United, are we?

This Little Light of Mine

Post Vice-Presidential debate and I am reeling.  I'm trying not to put too much political commentary on this blog, but it was too much.   I will be on pins and needles until November, but I still have hope that the American people will see through the facade.  I need to sleep this off.  Good Night.

Pac Man, Pong, and Centipede

This is dedicated to anyone who played on an original Atari Game System.

Life is a Game

Top story on Google News when I got up this morning was about Electronic Arts pulling the plug on a game under development.  I could never claim to be a gamer, but I do remember the day my uncle bought the Atari console for my cousins.  Boy, was I jealous.  Even after incessant pleading from me and my sister, my own parents would not budge.  My fate as a non-gamer was sealed.  Gaming is a big business.  EA reported 3.67 billion in revenue last year.  That's a lot of video games sold.

When I lived in LA, I used to drive by the EA building all the time.
